Former US president Donald Trump said China should pay reparations to at least partially compensate for the damage from the coronavirus pandemic, which he estimated at $60 trillion.

"They have to pay reparations, but China doesn't have the money for those reparations. I believe, and it's not just about the US, it's about the whole world, that the damage is $60 trillion. China doesn't have $60 trillion, but they have to do something to pay for the damage," Trump said in an interview with Fox.

In August, US intelligence released a report on the origin of the coronavirus. US intelligence agencies concluded that the coronavirus was not created as a biological weapon. However, participants of the investigation could not come to a consensus; two versions of the origin of the coronavirus were considered possible: "natural contact with an infected animal and an incident that occurred in a laboratory".

Earlier, US President Joe Biden accused China of withholding critical information about the origin of the coronavirus and vowed that he would not rest until he got answers.

Chinese authorities have said they support the scientific investigation into the origin of COVID-19, but oppose politicising the process.
