The International Organisation of Vine and Wine (OIV) forecasts global wine production in 2021 at 247.1-253.5 million hectolitres.

This would bring it close to the record low of 2017. The OIV notes that the drop in production is due to unfavourable climatic conditions.

"2021 will be the third consecutive year when global wine production will be below average due to late spring frosts and overall adverse climate conditions," the organisation said on Twitter.

The OIV estimates that global wine production will end the year at least 7% lower than the average of the past 20 years. "Wine production in 2021 can be considered extremely low and will be close to the historic low levels recorded four years ago," experts said.

It was previously reported that France will produce almost a third less wine in 2021 than in 2020. Spring frosts severely damaged local vineyards, the country's agriculture ministry said. According to its figures, winemakers will make just over 33 million hectolitres of beverage, a historically low figure.
