“We are nearly at the final phase, at least regarding a preliminary agreement,” EC spokesperson Olof Gill informed reporters in Brussels, emphasizing that this was because von der Leyen and Trump had previously engaged in a “productive discussion.”

Earlier on July 7, German government spokesperson Stefan Cornelius stated that the European Commission “is hopeful, but is considering several scenarios since time is limited.”

During the weekend, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz held telephone discussions regarding trade with French President Emmanuel Macron, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, and Ursula von der Leyen.

Bloomberg reported earlier that the EU is prepared to finalize a trade agreement with the US involving overall tariffs of 10%, while also offering reduced tariffs on various items: pharmaceuticals, beverages, semiconductors, and commercial airplanes.
