According to Politico, citing sources within the administration and the White House, the Trump administration's choice to enforce extensive export restrictions on Anthropic came after a tense 24-hour attempt to convince the company to willingly withdraw its newly launched Fable AI model.

The limitations came after multiple phone calls that included Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei and government officials such as Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and White House Cybersecurity Director Sean Cairncross, the report explained.

According to media sources, on Thursday, June 11, two days following the public launch of the Fable AI model, Amazon CEO Andy Jassy communicated his worries to the White House regarding the potential of bypassing the model's limitations.

By Friday, the matter was being deliberated at the "highest levels" within the White House—Bessent, Cairncross, Chief of Staff Susie Wiles, and various senior officials convened to talk about the AI model and the administration's forthcoming actions. They tried to reach Amodei, but he couldn't be reached as he was attending a "wellness retreat," sources from Politico reported.

A spokesperson for Anthropic refuted this, stating that Amodei was initially reached out to after midday and had returned to the conversation an hour and 15 minutes afterward.

Authorities recommended that Anthropic voluntarily remove the model and collaborate with the US government to address the vulnerability. Amodei asked for additional time and details, but did not verify that he would withdraw the AI model from public availability.

Soon after, the Trump administration released a directive prohibiting foreign users, including the company's overseas employees and those in the United States, from accessing Anthropic's latest and most advanced AI models. Anthropic declared that it was severing all connections with these AI models for users.
