When Anthropic advanced with the launch of its strong Claude Mythos model, Brin encouraged Google's DeepMind AI lab to accelerate their efforts during a gathering with 100 staff members in April, according to one of the sources.
According to Reuters, Gemini temporarily surpassed its rivals last November but subsequently lagged behind once more. A source and another individual familiar with the matter said that Google postponed the launch of a new Gemini version in August by two months after internal evaluations indicated its performance was inferior to rivals in programming. Google chose not to provide a comment.
On August 5, Alphabet revealed a significant restructuring of DeepMind's management. Demis Hassabis, the department head, stepped down and was succeeded by his deputy, Koray Kavukcuoglu. Hassabis was appointed chairman of the board, but currently has reduced management duties, according to Reuters. The agency reported that Gemini's two original technical leaders, Jeff Dean and Oriol Vinyals, have departed from the company to establish their own startup.
Google introduced Gemini in December 2023, labeling it as the "most advanced" AI model. At that moment, Google stated it surpassed OpenAI's GPT-3.5 chatbot.
