Due to their improper business practices, two divisions of Amazon.com Inc. have been penalized €10 million by Italy's antitrust authorities.

The authority points out that repeat purchases rather than one-time sales are the default setting for a variety of products sold on the www.amazon.it platform. This holds true for goods that are offered on Amazon's marketplace directly as well as by other companies.

The Italian regulator said in a statement that "checking the repeat purchase option by default encourages the user to buy a product even unnecessarily, thus limiting consumer choice."

"An operator of such scale as Amazon should create online interfaces for the shopping process that allow users to make free and informed choices," said the governing body.

Two legal organizations, Amazon Services Europe and Amazon EU, will pay the fine.
