The seller in this transaction was Bank of China Group Investment, one of ByteDance's early institutional investors. The initial sale of ByteDance's stake was valued at $200 million, based on a company valuation of $360 billion, as stated by Bloomberg's sources. However, during the auction process, which involved seven potential buyers, the price saw a sharp increase.

In the end, Capital Today, led by venture capitalist Kathy Xu, paid around $300 million for the stake, as reported by Bloomberg. Capital Today, ByteDance, and Bank of China did not respond to Bloomberg's inquiries for comments.

The intense competition during the auction can be attributed to the fact that selling a stake in ByteDance by a Chinese bank is a rare chance to acquire a substantial portion of the company’s shares, noted the source. This deal is among the largest secondary sales of ByteDance shares in 2025.
