The agency reported that Unifor members voted in favor of the contract on Sunday. GM's investment in the nation's automotive sector amounts to C$1.1 billion ($791.31 million). This encompasses C$691 million revealed in April for the manufacture of new V8 engines, alongside C$144 million for the assembly of the upcoming GMC Sierra heavy-duty truck at the Oshawa facility.
An additional C$215 million will be dedicated to initiating production of next-generation transmissions in St. Catharines in the latter half of 2029. Additionally, the carmaker has committed to temporarily halting the sale or shutdown of the CAMI facility in Ingersoll while it considers alternatives for its ongoing utilization.
The agreement involves 4,600 Canadian workers and ensures a 3% yearly wage hike for a period of three years.
This month, the United States enacted 50% tariffs on around $20 billion in Canadian products. Canada vowed to respond with equivalent actions beginning September 8. US President Donald Trump labeled Canada as one of the primary offenders of the US tariff policy.
