Bloomberg claimed that Russian nuclear exports increased in 2022, citing trade data gathered by the Royal United Services Institute for Defence and Security Studies.

The research demonstrates a 20%+ year-over-year growth in the availability of Russian nuclear fuel and nuclear power technology. Experts claim that since the EU and US rejected fresh sanctions against the sector, the influence of Russian nuclear experts has grown.

The agency noted that trade with sanctioned nations like Iran is not included in the statistics. According to Edwin Lyman, head of nuclear energy security at the Union of Concerned Scientists (UCS) in Washington, "Russian policymakers perceive nuclear trading as a way to develop allies." The "grand power competition" includes the supply of nuclear energy, he claimed.

Even though the nuclear sector in other areas of the world was declining after the fall of the Soviet Union, Russia kept investing in the development of nuclear fuel and technology, the agency reported.
