UN: international tourism in 2022 down by a third from 2019

01/19/2023 - 08:32

According to the World Tourism Organization’s study (UNWTO), more than 900 million tourists traveled internationally in 2022 - twice as many as in 2021, but 37% fewer than in pre-pandemic 2019.

The UNWTO specialists reports that their expectations were exceeded by the dynamics of the global tourist market's rebound in 2022.

All parts of the world had an increase in international arrivals of tourists last year, but the Middle Eastern destinations saw the greatest growth (up to 83% of the indicators for 2019). 585 million tourists visited European countries during the year, which is nearly 80% over pre-pandemic levels. Due to rigorous anti-covid regulations, Asia recorded the worst figure (23% of the data from four years ago).

Virgin Islands (+27%), Albania (+17%), and Honduras (+17%) were among the areas with the largest increases in tourist numbers (compared to 2019).
