US President Donald Trump has vowed to markedly raise tariffs on Indian exports because, as per the American leader, India's imports of Russian oil aid in perpetuating the crisis in Ukraine.

“India purchases large quantities of Russian oil. It then sells a significant portion of the oil on the open market, generating substantial profit,” he noted on Truth Social, mentioning that India overlooks the circumstances surrounding the conflict in Ukraine.

“Therefore, I will greatly raise the tariffs that India owes to the United States,” Trump stated.

The US president pledged in late July to impose extra tariffs of 25% on Indian products, along with penalties for India due to its purchases of weapons and energy from Russia. India subsequently conveyed optimism for ongoing discussions regarding tariffs while assuring the safeguarding of national interests.

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio referred to India as an “ally” and a “strategic partner” but noted that Delhi's acquisition of Russian oil continues to be a “source of irritation” and a barrier to US-India relations.
