Tesla's inaugural showroom in India will launch in Mumbai on July 15, and a second location in New Delhi is set to open at the end of July. According to the sources, the showrooms will serve as places where prospective buyers can learn about pricing and available trim options.
The initial shipment of rear-wheel drive Model Y SUVs has already reached the country from a factory in China, with deliveries set to commence in August.
India ranks as the third-largest automotive market globally, and its growth might assist Tesla in compensating for declining sales in different areas. In the second quarter, the company decreased deliveries by 13.5% from the same period last year, totaling 384,122 cars. The drop was the worst in the company's history, and it was noted for the second consecutive quarter.
Tesla's senior management previously mentioned that the primary barrier to the company's entry into the Indian market is the elevated import tariffs, which can reach 70% for vehicles manufactured overseas costing up to $40,000. In the U.S., the Model Y, the world's best-selling electric vehicle, is priced around $46,600.
