Study: Nearly half of the world uses social media networks

Population of the Earth is over 7.7 billion people, of which 4.3 billion use the Internet. 3.5 billion are active users of social networks, which is 0.5 billion more than in 2017, states a report of Global Digital Statshot research company.

As of July 2019, 46% of the world's population used social platforms, which is an increase of 7.8% compared to last year. Facebook remains the most popular social network with 2.4 billion users. The second place belongs to YouTube with 2 billion users. Instagram closes the top three as over 1 billion active accounts are registered there. Chinese social network Qzone, TikTok short video sharing service, Sina Weibo Chinese mini-blogging service, Reddit, Twitter, Douban, LinkedIn, Snapchat and Pinterest Chinese media platforms are also popular. The most popular messenger are  WhatsApp with 1.6 billion users, Messenger with 1.3 billion users and WeСhat with 1.1 billion users. The list also includes QQ, Viber and Discord.

The highest increase in popularity over the year is noted in Snapchat - its user base has grown by 19%, while Facebook and Instagram have grown by 3% and 5.9%, respectively.

The number of active Twitter users decreased by 3.1%. Facebook remains the most popular social network among teenagers: it has over 113.3 million registered users from 13 to 17 years old. The second place in terms of this indicator belongs to Snapchat with 66.9 million people, Instagram with 52.9 million teenage users closes the top three. Twitter is the least popular social network among young people as only 20.2 million teenagers are registered in it.

The report also says that there are over 5.1 billion mobile phone users in the world (66% of the population). 76% of all mobile phones work on the basis of the Android operating system, 22% on iOS, and only 2% use other operating systems. In a month, one user of a mobile device consumes 7.3 GB of information. Over 30.3 billion applications have been installed on smartphones; users spent $ 22.6 billion on them in the second quarter of 2019 alone, (an average of $ 4.04 per application). The largest number of active mobile users use WhatsApp, Facebook and Messenger.

Users spend the most money on Tinder, Netflix, and the Chinese Tencent Video streaming site.
As for Internet users in general, 56% of the population use the network. The least connected to the Internet are North Korea, South Sudan, Eritrea, Burundi and Somalia. 50.6% of the population connect to the Internet from mobile devices, 45.5% from computers and laptops, 3.8% from tablets, 0.12% from other devices (including consoles). The average speed of the mobile Internet is 27.4 mbps, which is 19% faster than last year. Cable Internet operates at an average speed of 59.5 mbps, an increase of 29% over last year.

Among Internet users, 93% watch online video, 70% use streaming music services, 51% watch video blogs, 47% listen to radio stations, 39% listen to podcasts. Most e-sports events are watched by users between the ages of 16 and 24 (32%), this same group most often watches video game streams (44%).
