Italy’s antitrust authority (Autorità Garante della Concorrenza e del Mercato, AGCM) has imposed a fine of €1 million on the Asian e-commerce platform Shein for misleading customers regarding the sustainability of its operations, according to AGCM.

This marks the second penalty Shein has faced from European authorities in the last month. In early July, the French competition regulator penalized the company €40 million for deceptive business practices, such as false discounts.

The AGCM imposed a fine on Infinite Styles Services Co., based in Dublin, which manages Shein’s website in Europe, after an investigation that began in September 2024.

The regulator stated that assertions on Shein's site concerning sustainability and social responsibility were “sometimes unclear, broad and/or excessively intrusive, and at other times absent or deceptive.”

The AGCM stated that assertions about product recycling “were untrue or at minimum deceptive, and the sustainability of the ‘evoluSHEIN by design’ line was overstated.

The regulator also questioned the company's “ambiguous and broad” claims regarding its pledge to cut emissions, pointing out that its emissions rose in both 2023 and 2024.

Shein stated that it had completely collaborated with the regulator and had promptly acted to resolve the identified problemsю
