In the past, ships traveling this route avoided Africa by going around the Cape of Good Hope because of security threats in the Red Sea. Currently, one of the corridors on the Gemini network, which Maersk is establishing alongside Germany's Hapag-Lloyd, will once more traverse the Suez Canal.

In recent years, many leading global container shipping lines have changed their vessel routes to go around the Cape of Good Hope for the same reason. This has resulted in longer delivery times and elevated transportation expenses. According to Reuters, the resumption of certain services on the Suez Canal route could signal a return to standard shipping on this path.

The Suez Canal links the Red Sea to the Mediterranean, reducing the travel time between Asia and Europe by a minimum of ten days. The water route manages as much as 15% of the world's maritime cargo volume, comprising 22% of container traffic, 20% of vehicle transport, and nearly 12% of oil exports. The Suez Canal serves as the northern access point to the Red Sea, whereas the Bab el-Mandeb Strait acts as the southern access point.

Tensions in the region have heightened following assaults by Yemeni Houthi rebels on merchant ships in the Bab el-Mandeb Strait, leading shipping firms to avoid Africa.
