Talking to soldiers in the Isère region, Macron justified the choice as essential to "enhance the connection between citizens and the military, bolster the nation’s readiness for combat, and enhance young people's education."
An annual day will be designated for choosing volunteers. Only those candidates deemed most promising from a military viewpoint will be accepted for voluntary service. Meanwhile, Macron described a scenario where voluntary service might be substituted with conscription. He remarked that in urgent circumstances, the parliament could allow the conscription of French citizens, but solely those who have shown prior interest in voluntary service.
Voluntary military service will be offered to young French citizens, mainly those who are 18 to 19 years old. The service duration will be ten months and the payment will be €800.
In the summer of 2026, three thousand individuals will be chosen for the service. By 2030, the target is to steadily rise to 10 thousand, and by 2035, to 50 thousand.
