TEPCO is anticipated to bring one of the seven reactors back online on January 20.
The report notes that Japan deactivated all 54 of its nuclear power reactors, including the Kashiwazaki-Kariwa Nuclear Power Plant, after the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear incident in 2011. In the last ten years, Japan has resumed operations for some of them.
Prior to the vote, hundreds of demonstrators, predominantly seniors, assembled outside the Niigata Prefectural Assembly building, concerned about a recurrence of the radiation catastrophe.
In March 2011, a tsunami was triggered by an earthquake that hit off Japan's northeastern coast. A massive wave hit the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power station, resulting in the most severe incident since the Chernobyl disaster in 1986.
