Instagram introduces competitor to TikTok

08/06/2020 - 05:00

The social network Instagram has launched the video editor Reels, which resembles TikTok in functionality, reports The Verge.

The tool allows creating 15-second videos, adjust the speed, add music or borrow an audio track from other videos, and apply various effects. The service was launched on iOS and Android operating systems in 50 countries, including the USA, UK, France, Germany, Australia and Japan.

Earlier, The Wall Street Journal reported that Instagram was luring bloggers from TikTok to Reels and was ready to pay hundreds of thousands of dollars for it. In response, TikTok announced creation of its own $ 200 million fund to support creators.

TikTok may be blocked in the United States by decision of President Donald Trump due to the application's alleged surveillance of American users (TikTok is owned by the Chinese company ByteDance). Microsoft is trying to buy a stake in the company, which would stop the block.
