IMF Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva stated at a conference in Washington on Tuesday that she intends to urge G20 nations with adequate food capacity to band together in order to help countries in need.

"I'll be speaking about the necessity of cooperation at the G20 summit, among other topics. Countries with huge food production capacities should step up because, despite having enough food to feed everyone, we aren't supplying food to everyone who needs it. Hunger has become the world's most important issue," said Georgieva.

Additionally, she stated that assistance for impoverished areas that have not had time to recover from the coronavirus pandemic and increased attention to food production in developing nations are both necessary.

Georgieva said, underscoring the need of lifting restrictions on food exports: "There are still around 30 nations in the globe that ban food exports."
