Following the incidents involving weather balloons at the Lithuanian-Belarusian border, the European Union plans to speed up the implementation of the Eastern Flank Watch program and the European Drone Defense Initiative (EDDI), according to a statement by European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen on social media.

"Europe stands fully behind Lithuania in response to the ongoing violations of its airspace by illegal weather balloons. This is destabilizing. This is a provocation. We refer to this as a hybrid threat. We will not accept it," she wrote.

"This is one of the reasons we are pushing forward with our key initiatives – the Eastern Flank Watch program and the European Drone Defense Initiative (EDDI)," she added.

European Council President António Costa also posted on social media that "the EU will continue to apply pressure on the Belarusian regime" and will also back efforts to secure the EU's eastern border.

Earlier, the European Commission had intended to launch both programs in the first quarter of 2026 and reach initial operational readiness by the end of 2027.

EDDI was expected to be fully operational by the end of 2027, while the Eastern Flank Watch program was planned to be fully operational by the end of 2028. The stated aim of these initiatives was "to develop a technologically advanced system capable of countering drones."
