On February 20, the US Supreme Court determined that the decision by US President Donald Trump to impose tariffs on goods from many countries in 2025 was not lawful. In response, Trump stated his plan to increase tariffs on imported goods from every country, starting at 10% and later raising them to 15%.
According to the European Commission's estimates, this method will result in higher tariffs on several EU products, exceeding the 15% rate set during the EU-US discussions in the summer of 2025.
On February 23, the European Parliament paused the process of ratifying the agreement.
According to Bloomberg, the European Union came to an agreement with the United States on implementing 15% tariffs in order to prevent a major trade war with Washington. However, later efforts by the United States to apply the 50% tariffs originally meant for steel and aluminum imports to many other products, along with the disagreement regarding Greenland, made the situation more complex.
