In the context of the ongoing hostilities in Ukraine, the European Union intends to cooperate with Israel in the energy sector in order to free itself from reliance on Russian energy carriers, said Ursula von der Leyen, the head of the European Commission, in her speech at Ben Gurion University in southern Israel, where she was awarded an honorary doctorate degree.

"The Kremlin's actions have only strengthened our resolve to break free from Russian energy reliance. For example, we are presently discussing energy cooperation with Israel on two fronts. One is an undersea power cable connecting Israel to Cyprus and Greece... the other is a natural gas and hydrogen pipeline in the eastern Mediterranean," the European Commission president stated in her speech, which was broadcast live on her official Twitter account.

"These initiatives will help both the EU and Israel's future energy security," she continued.

The European Commission's President is in Israel on an official visit. She met with Israeli Prime Minister Naftali Bennett on Tuesday evening after meeting with Jewish Foreign Minister Yair Lapid the day before.
