Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission (EC), stated that the European side brought up the South China Sea and Taiwan situations during the EU-PRC summit in Beijing on Thursday.

"We talked about the tensions in the area, specifically the Taiwan Strait. We saw that the South China Sea is becoming more tense, which could jeopardize regional security. This is the reason, in a news conference held following the end of the EU-China summit negotiations, we are adamantly against any alteration of the status quo in Taiwan, particularly through the use of force," the head of the European Commission stated.

But she made it clear that the European Union "recognizes the one-China policy."

"Regional security will be strengthened if tensions and differences over the Taiwan Strait are resolved through dialog," von der Leyen stated.
