The list includes 78 people and eight organisations. The US also imposed sanctions against the republic: six legal entities and 16 individuals were blacklisted. The UK, Canada and Ukraine also joined the sanctions.

"Today the Council decided to impose restrictive measures against 78 Belarusian individuals and 8 legal entities. This decision was taken in view of the escalation of serious human rights violations in Belarus and the violent repression of civil society, democratic opposition and journalists," reads the EU Council statement released in Brussels.

Canada imposed sanctions on 17 individuals and 5 companies of Belarus. The United Kingdom sanctions are imposed on 11 individuals and 2 entities.

On 23 May, a Ryanair plane, flying from Athens to Vilnius, was grounded in Minsk airport in an emergency. President of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko said that the message about the plane being mined had come from Switzerland; Switzerland denied it. Roman Protasevich, founder of the Telegram channel Nexta, and his girlfriend Sofia Sapega from Russia were on board the plane and were detained.
