According to the results of counting 99.8% of the ballots, de la Espriella scored 49.7% of the votes, while Cepeda received 48.7%.

Bloomberg calls the election "one of the most tense and polarized in the country's history."

The final results will have to be confirmed during a slower legally binding count, when election authorities check official protocols from polling stations.

According to the results of the first round, de la Espriella scored 44%, while Cepeda scored 41%.

After the results were announced, US President Donald Trump congratulated de la Espriella on his victory in the first round and said he would support his candidacy in the second.

De la Espriella, also known as El Tigre (from the Spanish "Tiger"), is a lawyer and entrepreneur who has registered his candidacy from the Defenders of the Motherland movement he created. He calls himself a Trump supporter and promises to fight crime hard.
