This exceeds the amount of money raised by such startups in all of last year and is almost five times the amount raised in 2016 ($6.6bn), when investors started to pay more attention to such companies.

Among the technologies developed by the firms are exhaust gas cleaning systems, energy efficiency improvements in buildings, solar panels and wind turbines, energy storage systems, electric vehicles, software for calculating emissions from companies' operations, etc.

From 2016 to 2021, climate start-ups in the US raised the most money, followed by companies in China, Sweden and the UK. In Europe alone, investment by venture capital funds in climate startups has grown from $1.1bn in 2016 to $8bn this year.
