China's railroads carried record number of passengers and freight in 2023

China State Railway Group reports that 3.68 billion passengers used China's rail transportation services in 2023, which was a record number.

Additionally, the amount of freight carried by rail hit a record-breaking 3.91 billion tons.

According to the corporation, total revenue from rail transportation increased by 39% to 964.1 billion yuan ($135.8 billion) in the previous year, as reported by the Xinhua news agency.

China's railway network had 159,000 kilometers of operating length as of the end of 2023, with 45,000 kilometers of high-speed lines. 2,776,000 kilometers of high-speed lines were among the 3,637,000 kilometers of new tracks that were operational last year.

The nation's railway sector had capital investments in fixed assets of 764.5 billion yuan, an increase of 7.5% from 2022.
