China overtakes the US in number of dollar billionaires

In the latest Global Rich List 2026, which ranks countries based on the number of dollar billionaires, China has moved to the top position, overtaking the United States, as reported by the Chinese research group Hurun Research Institute. As of January, the list featured 726 new members, with 318 of them being Chinese citizens.

Hurun reports that the global count of individuals with a net worth of one billion dollars or more has exceeded 4,000 for the first time, with the total now standing at 4,020. China currently has 1,110 billionaires, which represents an increase of 287 from the previous year. The US is second, with 1,000 (+130). India is third, with 308 billionaires (+24). They are followed by Germany, the United Kingdom, and Switzerland. Russia ranked seventh, with 105 billionaires (+10). Australia, Singapore, and Canada were also included in the top ten.

American billionaire Elon Musk continues to hold the title of the world's richest person for the sixth consecutive year, with a net worth of $792 billion.

There are 114 companies on the list of billionaire companies that are based in the artificial intelligence industry. According to Hurun Research Institute, forty-six of these individuals are new, making AI the biggest contributor to the creation of new billionaires.
