According to Collider, Greta Gerwig's "Barbie" became the year's highest-grossing movie after bringing in $1.36 billion worldwide. Previously, the animated movie "The Super Mario Bros. Movie" held the top spot thanks to its $1.358 billion worldwide box office haul.
The movie also broke other records. In terms of domestic and international box office, the film turned out to be Warner Bros. studio's most lucrative release.
Prior to this, "Barbie" also broke the record for highest-grossing female-directed film. Variety estimates that Margot Robbie, who also serves as the film's producer and plays the main role, will make roughly $50 million from the release.
Warner Bros. owns the rights to display the movie; distribution of "Barbie" started on July 21.
