The Governor of the Bank of France, François Villeroy de Galhau, will step down from his position in early June this year, according to an announcement made by the central bank.

His second term in office was set to conclude in October 2027.

In a letter addressed to central bank employees, Villeroy de Galhau, who is 66 years old, mentioned that he had accepted an offer he could not decline and will be resigning from his position to take leadership of a Catholic organization that supports young people and families.

He thinks that by the time he is ready to leave, he will have completed "the main part of his mission" as governor of the Bank of France.

Villeroy de Galhau's early departure will enable the current French President, Emmanuel Macron, rather than his potential successor who will be elected in 2027, to appoint a new governor for the central bank.

The leader of the French Central Bank is automatically a member of the Governing Board of the European Central Bank.
