Australia earns $ 30.4 bln on Chinese tourists

Number of foreign tourists visiting Australia reached 8.5 million in the 12 months to March 2019, while China remains the largest source of tourists, reports Xinhua news agency.

The total number of tourists increased by 3% compared with the previous year. The amount they spent grew by 5% to 44.3 billion Australian dollars ($ 30.4 billion), showed data of Tourism Research Australia (TRA).

Chinese tourists remained the leading tourism source of income in Australia. The number of tourists from China increased by 2.9% to 1.3 million. The amount spent by them grew by 10% to 12 billion Australian dollars ($ 8.2 billion).

The number of tourists from India increased by 14.6% to 342.694 thousand after a 17% jump between 2017 and 2018.

However, Indian tourists have significant differences from travelers from other countries. Over 50% of Indian tourists came to Australia to visit friends and family. Among all foreign tourists, the share of such visitors is 30%.

Another difference is the length of travel. Indians stayed in Australia for an average of 61 nights, which is twice the average among all foreign tourists.

The number of tourists from Japan increased by 8.6% to 437,547 thousand

The number of tourists from France, Canada and the Netherlands grew by more than 5%, from the UK - decreased by 4%.
