Le Figaro reports that the European Asylum Agency (EUAA) has indicated that the volume of asylum requests from Syrians in the European Union has hit its lowest point since the downfall of Bashar al-Assad's regime in Syria.

‘In February, 5,000 Syrians sought asylum in Europe, a record low number not recorded in over ten years,’ the publication quoted the agency on Monday.

As per EUAA, the ascension of the group ‘Hayat Tahrir al-Sham’ (HTS) in December 2024 led to a ‘substantial shift’ in the asylum granting scenario in Europe: applications decreased by 70 percent relative to October 2024.

Prior to that, Syrians were the primary recipients of EU protection, provided to them across 27 EU countries.

"The most recent asylum data illustrates the significance of stability in other areas for Europe," remarked Magnus Brunner, a member of the European Commission for Home Affairs and Migration, regarding the new circumstances.
