The World Health Organization (WHO) said that the Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and Uganda is a public health emergency of international concern, as stated by the organization.

The outbreak, triggered by the Bundibugyo virus, "does not fulfill the requirements for a pandemic emergency."

As of May 16, Ituri Province in DRC has reported eight laboratory-confirmed Ebola cases, 246 suspected cases, and 80 suspected deaths across at least three health zones: Bunia, Rwampara, and Mongbwalu.

The WHO reported that in Kampala, Uganda's capital, two laboratory-confirmed Ebola cases (one resulting in death) were identified on May 15 and 16 in individuals who had come from the DRC.

They mentioned that there are presently no sanctioned therapies or vaccines for the Bundibugyo virus (even though there are for the Ebola-Zaire strain). Consequently, the incident is deemed an emergency, according to the statement.

According to Reuters, this marks the 17th outbreak of the Ebola virus in the DRC since it was first recognized in the nation in 1976.
