By the week's end, they are anticipated to reach the northern Arabian Sea, where the US Navy's carrier strike group, commanded by the aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln, is carrying out combat operations.
The team sent by the Pentagon to the Middle East consists of the amphibious assault ship USS Tripoli and the landing helicopter dock vessels USS San Diego and USS New Orleans. They house the 2,200 personnel of the 31st Marine Expeditionary Battalion, along with 20 F-35B fifth-generation stealth jets, MV-22 Osprey tiltrotor aircraft, and both attack and transport helicopters.
The amphibious assault unit and the 31st Marine Expeditionary Battalion are stationed in Japan indefinitely and tasked with missions in the Indo-Pacific area.
