"We kept it secret to maintain the element of surprise," he replied to a reporter's question at the White House.

"Who understands surprises more than Japan? Why were we not alerted about Pearl Harbor?" Trump made a joke, reminiscing about Japan's assault on the US in 1941.

On Thursday, the U.S. president welcomed Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi at the White House.

"I brought concrete suggestions to ease the energy market situation," Takaichi stated at the meeting.

The parties talked about topics concerning the economy, security, and rare earth metals with the US president, as well as energy.

The Prime Minister highlighted that the situation with Iran will negatively affect the world economy.
