Sony to release budget PlayStation 5 for the Japanese market

11/13/2025 - 05:40

Japanese Sony has introduced a more affordable version of the PlayStation 5 gaming console, which is expected to be roughly a quarter less expensive than the current model. The company stated that sales of the new console will start on November 21st, with a suggested price of around 55,000 yen ($355).

The new console has almost the same technical features as the existing PS5 model, except it does not include a disc drive. It also comes with a redesigned casing. This version will only be available for sale in Japan and will only support games from local game stores.

The lower price may help Sony increase sales during the busy winter holiday season, especially with rising inflation in Japan and increased competition from Nintendo.

Nintendo recently launched its Switch 2 console in June and has already sold over 10 million units. The Switch 2 is priced at approximately 50,000 yen.

In the third quarter of 2025, Sony sold 3.9 million PS5 consoles, a slight increase compared to the same period in the previous year.

Since the console was launched in 2020, Sony has raised prices in Japan and other regions on multiple occasions.
