Pentagon is urged to check SpaceX for hidden investments from China

US Democratic Senators Elizabeth Warren and Andy Kim urged the Pentagon to investigate Elon Musk's SpaceX, which is ranked first in Forbes' list of global billionaires with a reported net worth of $835.4 billion as of February 5. This comes amid concerns that Chinese investors may be secretly buying shares in the company, according to a letter sent to US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, as reported by Reuters.

The senators expressed worries that Chinese investments could pose a threat to national security and potentially impact the country's important military, intelligence, and civilian systems.

They cited reports and court statements indicating that some investors linked to China may have used companies based in the Cayman Islands and British Virgin Islands to hide their purchases of SpaceX shares.

The senators warned that any Chinese ownership stake in SpaceX could fall under US foreign ownership, control, or influence (FOCI) regulations, due to the risk of access to sensitive information and technology.

In the letter, they requested that the Pentagon reveal the extent of any Chinese involvement in SpaceX, evaluate whether the company is subject to FOCI rules, and determine if these investments should be reviewed by the Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States.  They requested a response by February 20.  Warren and Kim stated in the letter that SpaceX's recent purchase of xAI has made the matter of Chinese investment in the company more pressing.
