Japan, US join to develop next-gen nuclear reactors

A deal has been reached between Japan and the US to deepen bilateral collaboration on energy security and increase bilateral cooperation on building of nuclear reactors of the next generation.

According to Kyodo News Agency, the agreement was made during a meeting between US Secretary of Energy Jennifer Granholm and Japanese Minister of Economy, Trade, and Industry Yasutoshi Nishimura.

The parties specifically agreed to intensify their cooperation on the design and construction of small modular reactors and other nuclear reactors of the next generation "in each country as well as in third countries."

The agency adds that Japan and the U.S. also want to work together on matters related to energy security and the supply of liquefied natural gas (LNG).
