Ineos to close two more chemical plants in Germany due to high energy prices

10/07/2025 - 03:23

British firm Ineos has confirmed plans to shut down two manufacturing plants in Rheinberg, Germany, as a direct consequence of "damaging energy costs and carbon emissions" and the absence of tariff protections.

According to the announcement, "the shutdown of these strategically vital facilities," which manufacture "essential chemicals," will affect 175 positions.

The company's Allylics unit makes a crucial element for epoxy resins required in defense, aerospace, automotive, and renewable energy infrastructure. The electrochemical unit produces chlorine, which is necessary for water purification, pharmaceutical manufacturing, industrial applications, and disinfection, the company stated.

Unlike the United States, which has implemented significant tariffs to block the influx of low-cost chemicals from Asia, many of which are made with subsidized Russian oil and gas, Europe persists in keeping its markets open, the release stressed.

Ineos has previously shut down facilities in Grangemouth (UK), Geel (Belgium), is shuttering a plant in Gladbeck (Germany) and has idled operations in Tavaux (France) and Martorell (Spain).
