Japan's Honda Motor Co. has stopped making cars in Mexico because of a shortage of semiconductors, according to a report by Nikkei, which cited sources.

The problem started because of a disagreement involving the Dutch company Nexperia, which was added to the US Department of Commerce's sanctions list.

Nexperia has been owned by China's Wingtech Technologies since 2019, and Wingtech was placed on the list in 2024. New rules that began in September mean that any company owned by a sanctioned entity is automatically added to the list. Because of this, Dutch officials took action against Nexperia, and a local court removed its CEO. In response, the Chinese government placed limits on Nexperia's ability to export goods from China.

Nexperia is one of the largest makers of basic semiconductors, such as LED chips and transistors used in car electronics. A big part of its business is based in China.

Honda's factory in Mexico made about 190,000 cars in 2024, with 150,000 of them sent to the United States.
