Global steel production up 3.6% in 2021

Global steel production in 2021 was 1.912 billion tonnes, up 3.6% from 2020, according to the World Steel Association (WSA).

CIS countries, according to preliminary data, increased steel output by 5.6% to 105.6 million tonnes. The EU countries produced 152.5 million tonnes of steel (up 15.4%), including Germany with 40.1 million (up 12.3%). The remaining European countries increased steel output by 11.6% to 51.2 million tonnes.

Steel output in Asia and Oceania rose 0.6% to 1.382 billion tonnes, including a 3% decline in China to 1.033 billion, in India an increase of 17.8% to 118.1 million. North America produced 117.8 million tonnes (up 16.6%), including an 18.3% increase in the USA to 86 million tonnes. South America increased steel output by 17.8% to 45.6 million tonnes, including Brazil's 14.7% to 36 million tonnes.

Africa produced 16 million tonnes of steel (up 26.7%), the Middle East 41.2 million (up 1.2%), including 28.5 million tonnes in Iran (down 1.8%).

Global steel production, according to the WSA, was approximately 1.829 billion tonnes in 2020, down 0.9% compared with 2019.
