The US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) intends to relax the delivery criteria for new Boeing Co. planes that were established following several incidents, according to The Wall Street Journal, which cites sources.

The sources indicate that Boeing will obtain regulatory authorization to carry out final safety inspections for the 737 MAX independently. The announcement of the decision might come as soon as September 26.

Additionally, FAA inspectors will persist in their role of granting airworthiness certificates for aircraft necessary for commercial passenger flights, as noted by sources from the publication.

At present, all 737 MAX planes manufactured at the Renton facility undergo inspections by FAA inspectors. The WSJ reports that this poses challenges for the company, as it needs to align with the timetable of regulators. Additionally, delegating these tasks to Boeing will enable inspectors to conduct more comprehensive inspections of aircraft during manufacturing, instead of managing paperwork once they exit the assembly line.

Sources from WSJ point out that the FAA might raise the production limit for 737 MAX airplanes to 42 per month, up from the existing 38.
