A recent study from the think tank IEEFA suggests that meeting EU goals for heat pumps, solar, and wind energy could cut gas demand by roughly 25% by 2030, an amount comparable to double the LNG volume Qatar might supply to Europe by then.
Ana Maria Jaller-Makarewicz, Chief European Energy Analyst at IEEFA, contends that depending on unpredictable and costly LNG supplies from nations such as Qatar is a risky strategy for the EU, considering the lessons learned from rising tensions in the Middle East and disruptions in energy exports via the Strait of Hormuz. "The situation in the Strait of Hormuz highlights why Europe must stop depending on fossil fuel imports," Jaller-Makarewicz remarked.
According to experts, LNG shipments to Europe from Qatar and other Gulf nations rely on various long-term bilateral agreements that, as specialists point out, present a dual risk: they bind Europe to fossil fuel consumption for decades even as gas demand declines, and also offer less supply and pricing stability than anticipated, as purchasers face global market fluctuations and ambiguous long-term gas demand for what they have agreed to buy.
