He stated at a press conference in Brussels on Friday, following the Eurogroup's discussion on the EU's economic situation, that the EC will propose measures to lower electricity tax rates and ensure that electricity is taxed less than fossil fuels. These proposals also aim to enhance the performance of the grid infrastructure and modernize the emissions trading system. This includes updating the criteria for free allocation of allowances and increasing the allowances in the Market Stability Reserve to help reduce price fluctuations.

He mentioned that the EC is also prepared to collaborate closely with Member States in creating "national policy measures to reduce the effects of increasing energy prices."

Dombrovskis stated that "any successful national policies aimed at safeguarding the economy and people should follow important fundamental principles."

The EC member explained that these factors include the necessity for focused action, the temporary character of the situation, the lack of rise in overall demand for oil and gas, and the alignment with the ongoing requirement to keep decarbonizing our energy system.
