The European Commission (EC) stated that Shein, the Asian e-commerce platform, engages in sales practices that breach EU law and may incur fines if it does not alter its behavior.

European consumer protection regulators identified the violations, the EC stated in a release. The examination of Shein's practices is still in progress.

The infractions involve misleading discounts, meaning the appearance of advantageous deals is created by showing a higher ‘previous price’ in new promotions. They also involve tactics that coerce consumers into making quick purchases through artificial deadlines, deceptive product labeling, and misleading claims about the company's sustainability initiatives.

Shein has one month to address the noted violations and suggest measures to rectify the practices in line with EU regulations. If the company does not fix the violations, the EC may impose a fine related to its yearly revenue in the EU.

Shein was established in China in 2008, and the majority of its suppliers are located there. The company is currently based in Singapore and does not offer its products in China.
