The EC President stated on Wednesday during a discussion at the European Parliament plenary session in Strasbourg that the issue stems from the absence of sufficient interconnectors and networks, along with the EU's reliance on fossil fuels, when addressing the need to enhance the Union's competitiveness.
Von der Leyen cited figures. According to her, in 2025, the cost of electricity produced from gas is expected to average more than €100 for each megawatt-hour. The cost for one megawatt-hour of electricity generated from solar power is €34. A megawatt-hour of electricity produced through nuclear energy costs between €50 and €60.
“Low-carbon energy sources are not only available within the country but also have a positive impact on the environment. They provide us with more freedom, increased safety, and reduced expenses. This is why we are making significant investments in low-carbon energy sources today. Last year marked the first time in history when the amount of electricity generated from solar and wind energy surpassed the total electricity produced from all fossil fuels combined,” said the president of the European Commission, adding that nuclear electricity generation continues to increase each year.
However, she noted that further actions are necessary. Finishing the EU single market also means finishing the Energy Union, which she believes is "essential for further lowering prices."
