On June 22, the firm revealed a 20-year contract with Microsoft to provide energy to a data facility in west Texas. The gas-fired power plant for Project Kilby will be constructed to achieve this goal.
Set to start functioning in 2028, it will reach a maximum capacity of 2.67 GW, sufficient to supply energy to a city as large as San Francisco. It will receive gas from the nearby Permian Basin, the biggest gas field in the United States.
Gustavson stated, “We will examine different regions of the country alongside Microsoft and other possible clients. If the necessary elements are established to reach our desired profitability, there will be more [deal] announcements gradually.”
He added that Chevron recognizes opportunities for new initiatives in West Texas and finds the Midwest, the Gulf Coast, and Colorado's Rocky Mountain area appealing. The company is additionally looking into data center agreements in Utah, where it has hydrogen production plants.
