The details of the agreement will be made public soon, as the deal was finalized after more than a year of discussions. One of the sources mentioned that app developers will need to comply with certain Apple software requirements, including guidelines related to the age of users.
The 15% share is less than the usual 30% that Apple takes from in-app purchases on iPhones. However, the deal is expected to create a new source of income for Tencent. In the third quarter, mini-games on WeChat contributed 32.3 billion yuan ($4.5 billion) to the company’s revenue. Overall, Tencent’s sales rose to 192.9 billion yuan, with a 19% increase in net profit.
Apple also asked Tencent, which develops WeChat, to close any gaps that allowed app creators to direct users to external payment systems, avoiding Apple’s payment processing.
