This is the third time in a row that a lawsuit filed by persons accusing Bayer AG and its subsidiary Monsanto of developing a cancer-causing weed killer has been successful in the United States.
Lawsuits relating to the Roundup herbicide flooded Bayer AG nearly as soon as the German corporation finalized its $66 billion acquisition of Monsanto, the US business that produces Roundup directly, in 2018.
Over the years, the company has settled over 100,000 cases out of approximately 140,000 filed against it, for a total of more than $10 billion in customer settlements.
Some of the plaintiffs have refused to settle, and Bayer AG has already been involved in six lawsuits, three of which it has lost, resulting in it paying tens of millions of dollars in damages and billions in fines, while the other three - two in California and one in Missouri - have been successful. Bayer AG is attempting to secure a ruling from the United States Supreme Court that Roundup does not cause cancer in the coming days, in order to henge from further litigation expenditures on similar accusations.
