As stated by the hospital, the patient, admitted on May 7 and a passenger on the MV Hondius cruise ship with a previous outbreak, underwent routine blood collection and processing, although increased biosafety protocols were necessary due to the nature of the hantavirus.

Subsequently, it was found that urine disposal did not adhere to existing international protocols.

The medical center reported that 12 employees have been isolated for six weeks as a preventive measure, despite the very low risk of infection.

The administration of the medical center declared an internal inquiry. The hospital announced that it is prepared to take in new patients if needed.

In April, the MV Hondius, sailing under the Dutch flag, left Ushuaia, Argentina, heading to the Canary Islands. It was transporting roughly 150 individuals, comprising nationals from the United Kingdom, Spain, the Netherlands, and the United States.

On April 6, the 70-year-old citizen of the Netherlands became unwell and later passed away. His spouse, who arrived at Saint Helena, passed away on April 26 in South Africa, where tests verified hantavirus infection. A German national passed away on the vessel on May 2.
